#5-A: Fetus Tree

I was going to go with some profound title on this one like "Life in Death," but then I just opted for the ridiculous.

I'll tell you one thing that helps define a piece as art versus not art for me: whether or not it haunts me. Haunting goes squarely into the art category.

I saw this cut trunk on the way to Sime's school. But the thing is, I saw it a month ago. I couldn't stop thinking about it. And then I would look for it every couple days to see if it was still there. I was so worried it wouldn't be, it was keeping me up at night. I needed to photograph this trunk, or it was going to make me go just a little crazy. (Crazier than normal, that is.)

Another thing: I hate to pick just one photograph. Not because I think they're so amazing, it's just that each one has different qualities that are significant to me. I was only going to pick one. But then when I showed them to Dave, and explained to him what I like about them, he emphatically supported a multi post. That Dave...he's one of the good ones.

So here they are and the differences I find significant...

#1: I like the light fall off, texture and looming feel of the "fetus."

#2: This angle was a bit of an afterthought; I had actually started to pack up my equipment. But it turned out to be a favorite. It doesn't feature the "fetus" as much as I thought I wanted. But the vibrance of the sky cut by dark trees, plus the detail of the rotted trunk and low wide angle, make this an interesting perspective to me. It felt reminiscent of a Hayao Miyazaki creature.

These were shot with the camera hand-held and a tripod mounted flash.

That has got to be the weirdest (in a good way) tree trunk I've ever seen. It's so fatty! And the cross section does look like a fetus. Whadya know!

And I have a collection of photos of tree bark. We are always looking for texture and shape and light....
Maybe I need to name the tree that is deteriorating on our ditch bank.

Oh, man, I love it! Laughing my head off but darn it, it does look exactly like a fetus! And of course, you did an amazing job capturing it!
